My Favorite Seasonal Remedies
Two of the things that I enjoy preparing during cooler seasons are Elderberry Syrup and hand ground echinacea capsules.
Elderberry Syrup and echinacea are two of my favorite seasonal herbal remedies for the common cold and flu because they boost your immune system and can shorten the duration of a cold or the flu. I generally start taking elderberry syrup and echinacea when the weather begins to cool down. Just to be clear, these herbal remedies are not meant to replace doctor visits, simply to put natural preventative options to use. Read more about the benefits of Elderberry Syrup and echinacea.
Elderberry Syrup Recipe
- 1/2 c. Dried Elderberries
- 6 c. Water
- 2 Cinnamon Sticks
- 1 tbsp. Ginger (or fresh ginger root)
- Raw Honey
First, combine the elderberries, water, cinnamon sticks and ginger in a pot and bring to a boil. Once the elderberries reach a boil, reduce the heat and simmer for 45 minutes.
Next, remove the mixture from heat, pour 2 cups of the elderberry mixture through a strainer and into a glass measuring cup, and allow to cool before adding 1-2 tbsp. of raw honey to the measuring cup.
Use a funnel to pour the syrup into your containers and repeat until all are filled. *Remember to add honey to the glass measuring cup each time.
Store all bottles in the fridge. I like to take two droplets (or one tablespoon) of the elderberry syrup each morning.
This one is really simple! I picked up dried echinacea and a small bag of clear capsules from our local co-op. Grind your dried echinacea down to powder form and fill your capsules.
